2018... one hundred years since women - over 30 - got the vote. I'm pleased it's getting a lot of coverage across the media. It should. It feels to me like the culmination of all the wrongs and injustices done to women are being aired, examined and finally, addressed. If you're in any doubt about what the Suffragettes went through for this beginning of equality, then I recommend the film, 'Suffragette'. We need to know.
My decision to write about a women's refuge was taken before I realised that the centenary was imminent. One of those serendipitous things that happen from time to time. It was done to fulfill a promise to my fiesty friend, Janine Calder, who has worked with abused women for most of her working life. It is near completion and she has assured me it passes muster and is an authentic representation. It was difficult at first but, as always, my characters take over and tell the story for me. Oh and I've made sure there are some lovable men in the book as I wouldn't want any of the millions of decent blokes out there to feel bad about their gender.
